In the family "good shonen but widely underestimated," I asked Yu-Gi-Oh! A victim of its success and the commercial side that gradually invades the manga is often reduced to the term "manga for kids", it is not really ...
Yugi Muto is a nice boy. Probably a little too much, anyway. Proof is that it will annoy makes all the boys in her class. His grandfather ran a shop games, offered one day a puzzle Egyptian, ancient, never reconstituted before. But Yugi, gifted at games, managed to assemble. The result is not expected and the spirit of a pharaoh, locked in the puzzle for ages, will live in the body of the boy. The pharaoh is the inverse of the little guy, he is confident and good at everything. It will also help Yugi well, helping to get rid of several thugs and make friends with people of Anzu, Honda and Jono-Uchi (the latter two have been enemies of little Yugi). But problem: the Pharaoh does not remember his name or his past. Yugi decides to help him turn and find his memory missing. To do so, he will need to gather the seven thousand objects, including the puzzle is ...
The story of Yu-Gi-Oh (YGO for friends) is quite large and this short summary, which is not so short that it is not so representative. If Pharaoh's memory is always at the center of intrigue, it will often be put aside, the mistake many enemies coming to disturb that. Even if they still have a relationship with objects millennia (they are often the owners of one of them), allowing Kazuki Takahashi to advance the story. Thus, YGO is not really a shonen like Dragon Ball and Saint Seiya where the arches were not necessarily linked. Here, each arc gives details on the history and furthers the Schmilblick each enemy defeated is another step towards the memories of the pharaoh. But all this takes time, especially since Takahashi favors volumes to chronology rather slow, leaving little room for ellipses. Three volumes worth a day, about what you can imagine the time it takes Yugi and the others to achieve their ends. But this does not mean they boring, far away ...
Well, I must say that this is, it is preferable to adhere to card games (such Trading Card Games to the Magic, not Belotte eh) to assess YGO. Not that this is the only game in this manga (there are many different games in the first seven volumes) but it is still a large place in it. Simply put, volume eight in Volume thirty-one, it's only fair that with a break of two volumes to attempt a game soon. The author had already introduced the game Magic Wizard and his name in the manga in volumes two and five and was not thinking specifically return but was not counting on the desire of readers to discover new cards. As often in manga, Takahashi is anxious to meet his readers and has executed. And we will not complain, either. For if the first games were different (sets of yo-yo, gambling, ...), they were mostly an opportunity for Yugi to avenge his former enemies and were not really exciting. Not unpleasant, but not necessarily the kind of thing one reads indefinitely. The card game it fits better in the plot (the pharaoh's past is linked) and is much more dynamic, which is ironic for a card game supposed to be static. But duels not only serve to amuse the gallery, they are also of interest to give some personality to the characters. The deck (the pile of cards) often defines the duelist when we do not yet know the bride or the character of those we already know. Yugi plays and fairly thin, but tactical, while Jono-Uchi darken the job rather than Kaiba and deploy an enormous firepower. Similarly to the enemy: the Pegasus second stage rather opt for monsters toonesques gentillet look at while they are formidable. Same for most treacherous Bakura, who plays like he lives, biding his time to better hitting ... The duels are often fascinating and full of surprises, the possibilities are virtually endless. For those who love, duels are the big advantage of the manga but it does not rely on it as ...
For good duels without good characters, it would not much interest. Fortunately, Takahashi knows create interesting characters, often tortured and complicated evolutionary view. This is not so much on the side of the Gentiles will have to look for if they are friendly, no one will really be remembered if it is Yugi, charismatic hero and not invasive. Jono-Uchi is a good guy, relatively endearing as it is stupid but impressive and often synonymous with good surprises but here, there is clearly no match for rivals and enemies. It is they who make the whole show and they know how to do it, the devils. Seto Kaiba Consider, for example: it is the number one rival of the Pharaoh and was initially a real trash. He tried to crush them under concrete cubes, has launched a mad chainsaw at their heels, professional killers, ... And yet, he met Yugi is going to change, obviously. But so far, Kaiba does not become a lamb, as is often the case in shonen. Keeping his side haughty and superior, it will become nicer over the volumes, but will often provocative, including taking his time to save a Jono-Uchi in drowning. Even finding for Marik, interesting villain who is convinced that the murderer of his father while Yugi is the culprit is none other than ... himself! He will do everything to get rid of pharaoh before giving way to his double, even worse, unhealthy. Because Yugi is not alone in harboring a spirit in him and Marik addition, we must also note the great Bakura. Being the nicest imaginable when he is himself, he becomes a deeply insidious and evil, it has stopped at nothing to achieve his ends, even harming themselves or wait for many tomes before they reappear. Even if the American and French versions were widely criticized their actions, helping to take the anime for something for children, ill in YGO are far from angels and are much darker than many enemies encountered in various shonen yet least considered childish ...
To do anything to spoil the Kazuki is a good designer and has its own style. The characters are pretty thin, but tall with long slender legs well. What may shock a little when you fall on the manga soon becomes habitual and you realize that this makes the board fairly live. He is doing very well also making level monsters and more it goes, the more they are original. Insects, warriors, dragons, ... The artist seems at ease with everyone, even the most complicated. It is certainly helped by competent assistants but we must still recognize her great talent. Well, it has not always been like that and the first volumes are particularly ugly, it must be admitted. Yugi was a kind of large-headed dwarf and the Pharaoh like a demonic elf. But he has improved in each volume, which is obvious to every opening book. His style has recently further refined the views of the new covers made for the reissue of the Japanese manga. Too bad he seems to remain on its laurels and enjoy his royalties and did not seem to want to start a new series ...
If one summarizes, YGO has good characters, an attractive concept and impeccable designs. So everything is in the best of worlds? This is too good and YGo suffers from defects rather annoying ... The first and most obvious is the depiction of certain characters. Some mangaka planting trees in the background to fill the void, Takahashi creating characters. So we end up with Honda, Otogi and Anzu who do not say much, merely to observe duels without comment more than that. One way to do a little strange, hard to explain ... Another problem: Takahashi has trouble keeping the interest of his ongoing series. To his great regret, the games with the cards are often the best and when he tries to move away, it is a failure. The game with the dice is really exciting and the two small volumes which compose yet seem very long ... Even with finding the last part, the memory of the pharaoh left side of the cards to be rocked to the rhythm of combat monster invoked by tablets of stone. A little too classic, this arch is lower and will not be read many times. Too bad for him that ends the saga, barely saved by an atmosphere and decor with onions, ancient Egypt is very seductive, and a probable awareness of Takahashi. Thus, after five volumes increased to the regime, he decided to bring back dueling maps, to close the series in style. For once, we are not disappointed by the end, even if it leaves some things without resolution (Anzu's love for the Pharaoh). Still, the series never recovered from the Battle City, central part of the manga by far the most successful. All that was before and after seems to fade after this exciting tournament, which fortunately is most of the manga with a display of more than fifteen volumes.
Eventually, YGO is a relatively classic shonen if we omit maps and even a little darker than others. Unfortunately, its design prevents it from touching everyone (playing cards can not please everyone) and the French version of the animated series has done much harm to this manga that do not deserve it. Give him a chance, YGO is more mature and better than you think ...
