Slayers is a series of heroic fantasy created by Hajime Kanzaki and illustrated by Rui Araizumi, dating from 1995. It is available in quite a volume of manga, anime (3 seasons), 2 / 3 OVA, and 5 movies. It is also released as a role-playing games for Playstation, as well as Super Nintendo. The series returns with 13 episodes, called Slayers Revolution.
Slayers, inspired by Dungeons and Dragons, depicts the adventures of the young sorceress Lina Inverse and her companions through their journey into their world. Using powerful magic, and with the handle of the sword, they fought terrible wizards, demons seeking to destroy the world, dark lords, and wretched gang of bandits. Having decimated the entire population of villains, Lina and her companions decided to go hunting for the pirates.
One of the important characteristics of Slayers humor was repetitive and his eccentric character, like seeing Lina and Gourry fall upon the food like wolves while restaurant patrons were terrified, and the characters who met Lina and marveled to the flatness of her chest. But then again, these were served with absolutely hysterical jokes that took you by surprise. This time the writers and directors rely primarily on old jokes that amuse even sure, but hardly sufficient to support a little more animated. In short Slayers Revolution does not give us many surprises.
Despite the decrease of coherence of humor, there are still some brilliant moments of pure comedy. Including one involving a giant golem fashioned after a beetle. There were several very funny jokes that will see more in most series. The new hero of the story is a prince with the body of a stuffed animal named Pokot ridiculous. For a while Lina notes subtly he should be a Pokemon, it's funny how animations can be self-derision.
This new season brings a bit of social criticism, the villain turns out to be a kingdom destroyed by the plague, in part to the neglect of other countries that have sent a token support, but never bothered to monitor the state of the country otherwise they would have known that the aid was never reached its destination. Seeking to avenge his countrymen, he detaches a beast invincible and offers help to reproduce if it destroys the country that considers itself responsible for the abandonment of his people. The result is a rampage that made a little tribute to Godzilla. There is also a mysterious assassin ninja, whose goal is to take the life of Lina, but that's another matter that is not revealed immediately.
Slayers Revolution rely too much on the gags in place, and seems unable to find his groove in the first 13 episodes. But it's still a very entertaining, very funny and silly, with lots of potential but does not quite want to watch the next episodes. After so much time, we expected something really new and amazing.
